Calf Strain
A calf strain occurs when one or more of the muscles at the back of the lower leg are overstretched or torn. It commonly happens during running, jumping, sprinting or sudden changes in direction, causing pain, tightness and difficulty walking or exercising.
With early treatment and the right rehabilitation, most people make a full recovery and return to their usual activities.
Signs & Symptoms of Calf Strain
Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the injury but commonly include:
- Sudden sharp pain in the calf
- A popping or tearing sensation
- Tenderness
- Swelling or bruising
- Tightness in the calf
- Weakness when pushing up onto your toes
- Pain when stretching the muscle
What Can Cause Calf Strain?
Calf strains usually occur when the muscles are overloaded during activities such as sprinting, jumping or sudden acceleration.
Muscle fatigue, poor warm-ups, tight calf muscles and returning to sport too quickly after a previous injury can all increase the risk.
Treatment Options For Calf Strain
Treatment focuses on reducing pain, promoting healing and gradually restoring strength and function.
Treatment may include:
- Advice on managing the injury during the early stages
- Progressive strengthening exercises
- Stretching and mobility exercises when appropriate
- Balance and rehabilitation exercises
- Manual therapy to reduce muscle tightness
- A gradual return to sport and everyday activities
