Haematoma
A haematoma is a collection of blood that forms outside a blood vessel after an injury or direct impact. It often causes swelling, bruising, tenderness and sometimes a noticeable lump.
Most haematomas heal naturally over time, but larger or more painful injuries may benefit from professional assessment and treatment.
Signs & Symptoms of Haematoma
Symptoms vary depending on the size and location of the injury, but commonly include:
- Swelling or a visible lump
- Bruising
- Tenderness or pain
- Stiffness
- Weakness
- Pain during walking, running or climbing stairs
- Reduced movement in the affected area
- A feeling of pressure around the injury
What Can Cause Haematoma?
Haematomas are most often caused by a fall, direct blow or sporting injury that damages blood vessels beneath the skin. They can also occur after surgery or injections, and are more common in people taking blood-thinning medication.
While most are minor, larger haematomas can be more painful and take longer to recover.
Treatment Options For Haematoma
Treatment focuses on reducing bleeding, managing pain and supporting healing.
During the first 24–48 hours, the RICE approach is usually recommended:
- Rest the injured area
- Apply ice wrapped in a towel for short periods
- Use gentle compression if appropriate
- Keep the area elevated where possible
